How do rewinders and cutting machines work?

Cutting technology covers a wide range of applications. These range from assembly solutions and individual machines to integration into existing plant systems. Cutting systems can basically be divided into longitudinal cutting and cross cutting.

Longitudinal cutting applications are used to perform edge trimming or multi-sheet slitting. This allows the edge area normally used for the process to be removed before the finished roll is wound. The desired width of material is also usually achieved in one operation by edge trimming on both sides. After the cutting process, the edge trims can be removed from the side and wound up separately, vacuumed or fed into a collection container. In the case of unmixed materials, it may also be possible to recycle the edge trim.

On the other hand, the centre or multi-lane longitudinal cuts remain in the finished roll until rewinding. To avoid overlapping of the cut edges during rewinding, they can be spaced by means of spreader rolls. Alternatively, the individual webs can be rewound in staggered rewind axes for multi-web slitting.

Cross-cut applications are used to separate web material. A continuous cut is made at right angles to the running direction of the material. In the production process, especially in the processing of webs, it is essential that the material is cut precisely when the defined length is reached. Cross cutters can also be used to remove poor quality samples or sections.
