The use of storage systems is necessary in order to achieve an end-to-end, continuous process without a system downtime when changing the material reel at the end and beginning of a line of web-shaped materials. How does a accumulator work ?
Accumulation systems are mainly used after unwinding and before rewinding systems of web-shaped materials. During the respective material change at the beginning and end of a system, the respective accumulation unit is either empty or full in order to allow the process in between to run continuously without interruption.
Material is conveyed into the accumulation unit with a pulling mechanism on the inlet side. Depending on the desired storage length, the material is alternately fed vertically several times through rows of rollers arranged in an offset manner. While the lower row of rollers is firmly positioned, the upper row of rollers can be moved vertically. Raising the upper row of rollers fills the accumulation unit with material so that the subsequent process can be temporarily stopped. In the meantime, the accumulation unit is emptied when the upper row of rollers is shut down and the preprocess can be temporarily stopped. Thus, a accumulation unit is always run full after the winding process while the accumulation unit is run empty before the winding system.
A pulling mechanism positioned on the outlet side ensures constant tension and material transport through the accumulation unit by means of a web tension control. The required stopping time and the maximum production speed result in the necessary storage lengths of the accumulation units.
