How does a plate calibrator work?
Basically, foamed extrudates do not have a defined material thickness when exiting the extruder nozzle. In addition, you need a pulling mechanism to feed the material coming from the extruder nozzle to the follow-up process. A so-called plate calibrator is used for this.
The sheet-like foam extrudate is extruded directly into the plate calibration unit. Two calibration plates aligned horizontally and parallel to each other and vertically movable over a precisely defined gap deform the initially plastic extrudate to the desired material thickness. Thanks to the water-cooled calibration plates, the extrudate is cooled on the surface in addition to the thickness calibration.
Two roller conveyors positioned directly behind the calibration plates pull the calibrated material and convey it to the subsequent process. The roller conveyors, which can also be moved vertically over a defined gap, consist of individually driven draw rollers lying horizontally behind one another.
